Due to CUBE BAND’s unique orchestration (pipa, guzheng, and percussion), few existing pieces are suitable for the trio. This disadvantage is turned into an advantage when they commissioned brand new pieces tailored for them. In 2020, Studio Acht commissioned works from world-renowned composers Chong Kee Yong and Wang Ying; their new compositions beautifully fuse the traditional and the contemporary and explore new possibilities of instrumental sounds and techniques.

Walk through the 19th Valley of the Shadow of Death is inspired by the Book of Psalms, and it is the third piece composed by Chong Kee Yong in the face of Covid-19. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Through the 19 musical variations of mirror symmetry, Chong’s music restores peace to anxious minds.

Wang Ying’s ¾ - Trio in the Cube begins with a dynamic staccato and takes a deep dive to unearth the unique characteristics of each instrument. The piece employs rhythmic counterpoints and contrasting timbres to create vibrant sound effects. Each with its distinctive timbre, the three instruments weave in and out of various rhythmic combinations, forming concertatos and contrasts of “three” and “four.” Instead of sentimentality, the piece celebrates the brilliance and passion of life.
