In The Multiple Definitions of Harmony, Music Unlimited Project No.12, Taipei Chamber Singers (TCS) invited composer Kuei-Ju Lin, playwright Wan-Ting Shen, and theater artists The Double Theater, and Shen-Quan Huang, to create an immersive music theater. The production extracts memory nodes from TCS’s thirty years of history, reflecting social dynamics through the meeting and parting of its members.
In the theater, the audience wanders along the pre-set routes with their mobile phones and earphones, experiencing co-created texts and contemporary choral music presented by the choir. They scan QR codes that lead them to eight randomly generated routes. Each route is associated with a set of texts and music for the audience to remember every random encounter in the theater. When the audience realizes what they have chosen is only one eighth of the entire theater, they are led to the ending of the theater—a live performance of “Are You Ready” in which free voices ramble about in the space.
Audience-performer relationship undergoes a qualitative change through spatial arrangement. When the audience is invited to walk into the group of 16 singers, the soundscape varies as the singers change their positions. The audience is encouraged to sing the same sounds with the singers, becoming a part of the performance rather than passively accepting all the arrangements.
While numbers can represent the countdown before coming on stage, they may also signify a countdown to the future. We invite you to experience with us some moments of life within this short 20 minutes. Let us listen, feel, and make free associations together, so that we may tread into the unknown with more ease and openness in the future.
